Guerrilla Thinking & Jay Levinson

Guerrilla Marketing is a frame of mind. Jay Conrad Levinson popularized the term Guerrilla Marketing, but he attributes the term to somebody else. I don’t care who said the term first—Jay gave context to the term “Guerrilla Marketing” in the 14 million Guerrilla Marketing books sold in over 42 languages.

Most people engage his texts by looking for lists of tactics. In any of his Guerrilla Marketing books you’ll find such lists. Use these tools. However, the values behind the list construction may be the most valuable part of the Guerrilla Marketing.

I loved Levinson’s The Way of the Guerrilla and Levinson’s Guerrilla Creativity. These books don’t have the long lists of the tactics that his better selling books have. I’d like to suggest that every reader of Guerrilla Marketing will get better use out of Levinson’s tactics if they read Levinson’s philosophy. Guerrilla Marketing is a frame of mind, not saving money on a specific assignment, but about living a more effective life.

Work is one facet of life. Jay is a genius. One of the first things he figured out was that he didn’t want to work five days a week, see what I mean…Genius. If you have figured out that you don’t want to work 5-days-a-week-for-the-man then you’re a genius, too.

Guerrilla Marketing will help you with your corporate job. The Way of The Guerrilla helps you apply these philosophies to your entire life and create sustainable income outside of the traditional corporate structure.

It was Levinson’s approach to living and thinking that inspired me to write Think Two Products Ahead.

Thank you Jay!

Your friend and admirer,

Ben

Surfer and...Shark?

Kurt Jones
This shot by surf photographer Kurt Jones is legendary. It looks like a surfer and, to many, a very large and very close shark. But looks are deceiving...

...yes, the picture is real, it's really a very large and very close dolphin.

Whew! And wow!

Headington Shark

Oh the humanity!

Since this is already a world-famous image except to all of us here, the Headington Shark exemplifies all the best qualities of rockstarring...
  1. It is outrageous,
  2. The neighbors hated it at first, and now love it with pride,
  3. Its benefactor had it installed as a powerful statement about "impotence."
  4. City council were drove out of their minds (and also now love it).

"We interupt this joke to bring a blog"

A couple of New Jersey hunters are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn't seem to be breathing, his eyes are rolled back in his head. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps to the operator: “My friend is dead! What can I do?” The operator, in a calm soothing voice says: “Just take it easy. I can help. First, let's make sure he's dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy's voice comes back on the line. He says: “OK, now what?"

DJ Unimportant's Year of the Fucktard

YOTF

For the record, DJ Unimportant is performance artist Mongo Nikol, the inspired ringmaster behind the direction of this very site. And as reported earlier here at H2RS, this is the cover of the new DJ Unimportant album, Year of the Fucktard - DJ U's first release since moving back to the US from Canada, and the artist's fourth since '03!

So, how is it the bleeding-edge noise artist remains so dedicated and mobile yet simultaneously so mobile and genuinely unusual? It must be the good living and clean water of Montreal (not to mention the influence of having such neighbors such as DJs Tiga and Buck 65, as well as the Arcade Fire).

In any case, Year of the Fucktard is described as being a "traditional mix tape release of non-traditions future sound, music and noise, for a 21st century audience." Here's what DJ U had to say about it himself,
This was a tough album to make, tougher than the rest, because I have been on the road the whole time since my last album with Epeorus Music, and been dealing with passport and citizenship issues from when I renounced my US citizenship at the US consulate in Vancouver, '03. Plus I get an enormous amount of flak from other artists who continue to make commercial and unintelligent music, even the ones I am friends with or whose music I play.

This album, therefore, is a lot about that, because I am now clear on what I want from a nation and what is unacceptable to me as I am about what I find unacceptable and what I find about music. Which is exactly how I feel about music. Most is unacceptable because of what is happening now. I like pop, and I think it's relevant to mix it in and showcase it appropriately, but my first priority is being true to the music I compose and perform, that both fans and peers oddly call noise.

Fucktardin'-a right! GIVER!

Here's the entire '06 mix album, track for track, for our H2RS audience's listening pleasure.*

Jerkcity

This is what Encyclopedia Of Stupid says about internet comicstrip Jerkcity,

Jerkcity is stupid.

Sometime before 1975, someone invented IRC, to facilitate nerds being able to talk to each other without having to have actual social interaction. One day, someone decided that text on a screen like this just wasn't very sexy:

<_purifier> i know
<_purifier> kidding.
did someone buy it
i left a $1 there
*** rbw (rbw@malkavian.org) has joined channel #rfa
Stranded seamen running out of air
uh huh huh
set sail for dick

These same somebodies invented a program called Comic Chat which connected to IRC like other IRC clients, but instead of boring text on a screen, the conversation would be illustrated by the nonstop generation of comic strips featuring art by some fag named Jim Woodring. The quality of the conversations was not affected (it was still stupid).

Comic Chat was later co-opted by Microsoft and became Microsoft Chat. It was then that the geniuses behind Jerkcity (most notably Tristan Farnon of Leisuretown) got the bright idea to make a real comic strip from real IRC conversations, and since most IRC conversations are simply extended dick jokes, much hilarity ensued.

Most of Jerkcity's best moments involve an onomotopaeic representation of cocksucking (http://www.jerkcity.com/search/index.cgi?m=32&q=hlu), hence the connection to cocks, dongs, dicks, pricks and homo jokes. These are usually coupled with arcane Unix references that only nerds really appreciate.

Get it? No, well how about from Jerkcity's own page...

After reading Instapundit's very interesting follow-up to his take on the utter inadequacy of coffemakers, a subject close to the heart of all people who are civilized/gave up on the other drugs, this jewel of a unit came to our attention.

Forty-two of the forty-six reviews at Amazon gave the machine four stars or more. Of the three bad reviews, two were dud machines (it happens), and the last review preferred the flavor of Mr. Coffee's brew. Gulp!

To each their own. But 42 of 46 reviews - all else by people who actually prefer good coffee - raved about this machine, it's drip-coffee brew, and what a pleasure it is to use.

Mmmm. Coffee. Even drip. . . as long as its good!

Royal De Luxe's The Sultan's Elephant

    Here's the story.

This amazing work, The Sultan's Elephant - a magnificent living construct of wood, mechanical genius, and joie de vivre - was inspired and created by France's highly-regarded Royal De Luxe street theatre company to commemorate the 100-year mark of the death of visionaire extraordinaire Jules Verne, in the town of Amiens in Somme, where the French writer lived the second half of his life, and died at the age of 77 in 1905.

As can be seen in the video, the Sultan's Elephant does indeed quite actually come to life. In particular due to the sounds surrounding the beast's actions and forward motion.

Their is a alchemical blend of dramaturgic elements, including the wizardly soundscaping. From the sound reinforcement providers Nexo's website came this very insightful release,

The centenary of Jules Verne’s death in 2005 has provided the inspiration for a unique 3-day spectacle featuring one of France's most innovative theatre companies, Royal de Luxe. Combining elements of street theatre, circus and carnival, the extraordinary event featuring a robot elephant and a giant doll demanded all of the expertise of French PA company Melpomen – and all of the NEXO inventory.

Royal de Luxe, which was established in the early eighties, has become famous for its street spectacles where creativity is teamed with extravagant production. The company lives up to its reputation with 'The Sultan and his Time-Travelling Elephant', unforgettable street entertainment which attracted more than 100,000 spectators in the two cities, Amiens in Somme and Rennes in Britanny, which had been home to Jules Verne, the father of science fiction.

"A spectacle from Royal de Luxe is made up of gigantism, surprises, astonishments and, most importantly, a high level of professionalism that everyone, participants and audience alike, remembers with emotion," says Trenchant.

According to the group and the above press release, audiences upwards of 100,000 people (!) follow the creature whereever it appears, so entrancing is it's performance. In the video, notice to what effect the music is used, as if laying down a magic carpet which brings the fantastic anachronistic mechani-bot elephant to life.

The breathtaking and amazing image above was happened upon by way of our following a random link that was displayed up while Googling for this. All of us here? Jumping up and singing vogueing! Shouting together, "We...are...fam-i-lee!..."

Naturally, H2RS assimilated the cc out of it, and then blew up to appropriately legendary proportions. (God knows a lot more gayness can only make the world less less Starbucky, and more more happy happy happy again again.)

Myspace is ordinary, but sometimes somebody does something right, and then it's like...Peanutbutter Jelly Time all over again!

Thank you, Future Ex-Husband, you are fam-i-lee! And you judging from what's listing and playing at your myspace site, you have great taste in taste and music, too. Care to DJ our next party?

    Sorthly

    leonard+nimoy

Today on boingboing, Cory posted an entry which included a quasi-typo, the word "sorthly." Here it is.

    Tonight's numerically significant date/time: 01:02:03 04.05.06

Xavier sez, "Tonight, sorthly [my highlights] after 1 AM, the time and date combination will be really funny: 01:02:03 04.05.06." Link (Thanks, Xavier!)

posted by Cory Doctorow at 04:02:06 AM permalink | blogs' comments

And the word "sorthly" sort of fit, an amalgamative juxtaposition of the ideas...
    1. "sort of," and
    2. "soonly," and
    3. "shortly"
    ...thus sorthly.

From an matter-of-fact-cum-existential point of view the notable occasion Cory remarked upon what will happen sorthly after 1 AM.

And then I googled the word "sorth" (no, sweet Google, I didn't mean "north," though thank for suggesting), and at sorth.com, I located the site of Stephen Orth, senior software developer and general bigwig at digital stock giant Getty Images, who had happened to have written and included in his resume a link to the paper he wrote (and is obviously pleased with, and writefully so) while completing an MA in English at the University of New Mexico, wonderfully and irresistibly titled, Huckleberry Finn and Existentialism, 1995, S.Orth, from which comes this delightful paragraph, which I now reproduce for your thoughtful pleasure and distraction,

In contemplating Huck's periods of freedom and non-freedom, I cannot help but think of Albert Camus's interpretation of the Myth of Sisyphusi. Sisyphus's torment is never ending. Each time he reaches the summit of the hill with his stone, it rolls downward again. However, it is during this return, the pause in which the stone rolls backward, in which Camus interprets Sisyphus to be happy. As Camus states, "for Sisyphus, that moment is like a breathing space which returns as surely as his suffering; it is Sisyphus's hour of consciousness."ii Therefore, it can be said that Huck also enjoys a similar "breathing space" in his moments of freedom. The pause, in the periods of true freedom on the river, is Huck's hour of consciousness. Thus, one must assume, Huck, like Sisyphus, finds happiness in his hour of consciousness, and that he is, after all, happy. And thankfully, Huck, unlike Sisyphus, has only to endure the torments of civilization until the moment of his inevitable death.

iCamus, p121. Sisyphus, a figure of Greek mythology, had been condemned by the Gods to ceaselessly roll a rock to the top of a mountain, whence the stone would fall back of its own weight.
    iiCamus, p121.

Camus, Albert. The Myth of Sisyphus and Other Essays. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964.

In other words, Huck, from an existentialist point of view, often experiences happiness, regularly through life albeit...

...and here's big evermore pay-off for which all of us have been waiting, with especial nods to boingboing, Cory Doctorow, Stephen M. Orth, Mark Twain, and Albert Camus, and possibly Kevin Bacon or Rod Steiger...

    ... sorthly.
